Utopia Island Safaga — The Private Island Day Most People in Hurghada Don’t Know Exists. Most people come to the Red Sea and spend their days at the same three reef spots everyone else goes to. Utopia Island Safaga is what happens when you take a different boat to a different part of the coast — and the sea genuinely looks untouched. The island sits offshore in waters that Safaga has been quietly protecting for years. The reef around it is healthier than most of what you find closer to the main marina. The beach is white, flat, and rarely crowded. And the whole day — boat, snorkeling, lunch, banana boat, beach time — runs at a price that makes you question why you would ever do anything else with a free day on the Egyptian coast.
What the Day Actually Looks Like
Pickup runs from 07:30 onwards depending on where you are staying — Hurghada, Makadi Bay, El Gouna, Sahl Hasheesh, and Soma Bay all have collection points. The drive to Safaga marina takes between 20 and 45 minutes depending on your starting point. By the time you board and the boat engine starts, the salt air handles whatever is left of the morning.
The crossing to Utopia Island Safaga takes roughly 45 minutes on open water. There is shaded seating below and a sun deck above — most people spend the journey on the upper deck watching the coast disappear behind them. The sea between Safaga and the island is a different shade of blue from what you see near the marina. Clearer, deeper, less churned up by traffic.
The snorkeling stops before you reach the island itself. The reef gardens here sit in shallow water — two to five metres at most in the spots the guide takes you to — which makes them accessible without any diving experience or strong swimming ability. The coral is intact in a way that takes a moment to register if you have snorkeled in busier areas. Fish life is dense. Parrotfish, angelfish, lionfish keeping their distance in the coral folds, the occasional reef shark moving along the wall below without any interest in you whatsoever.
The Beach Time at Utopia Island
After the snorkeling stops, the boat moors at the island and you have a few hours of actual beach time. The sand is white and soft. The water directly off the beach is clear and shallow enough for children to wade without supervision anxiety. There is shade available if you need it and open sun if you do not.
The included activities — banana boat and inflatable sofa ride — run off the island beach with the crew supervising every round. Life jackets on, no exceptions, which is the right call when the boat gets moving. Additional rounds can be arranged on the day if your group wants more. Jet ski sessions and paddleboard rentals are available at extra cost — ask the crew when you arrive.
Lunch on Utopia Island Safaga
Lunch is served beachside and it is proper food. Grilled chicken, rice, fresh salad, local mezze, bread, seasonal fruit. Vegetarian options and children’s portions are available if you mention them when booking — not as an afterthought when you are already sitting down with a plate in front of you. Tea, coffee, and soft drinks are included. The Egyptian mint tea at the end of the meal is the detail that turns a good lunch into a very good lunch.
Most guests are surprised by how much food there is. Plan accordingly.
Who This Trip Works Best For
Families with children are the core audience for Utopia Island Safaga — the shallow reef snorkeling, the safe beach, the inflatable rides, the food — all of it is calibrated for a group that includes people aged 6 to 65 who want a full day without anyone being bored or left out. The crew carries children’s life jackets down to small sizes and they are used to managing groups with mixed ages and swimming abilities.
Couples who want a quieter alternative to the busier Giftun Island routes also do well here. Safaga sits far enough south that the tourist boat density is significantly lower. You will not be sharing a snorkel site with four other boats.

Practical Information for 2026
Bring reef-safe sunscreen — standard chemical sunscreens are banned at several protected Red Sea sites and Safaga’s reef areas are regulated. SPF 50 minimum, apply before you leave the hotel rather than on the boat. A hat, sunglasses, and a towel are the other three things that separate a comfortable day from a painful one. A waterproof phone case or small dry bag for the inflatable rides is worth the five euros it costs.
Book in advance during October through April — this is peak season and the boat fills. Outside those months availability is easier but the earlier morning pickup slots go first regardless of season.
The boats used for Utopia Island Safaga trips are maintained and CDWS-licensed. The crew holds first aid training. The captain adjusts site timing and route for sea conditions on the day — if the weather shifts, the program adapts rather than pushing through conditions that are not comfortable for guests.
