The first time I went snorkeling in Hurghada, I thought I knew what I was doing.
Turns out… I forgot to spit in my mask.
I spent ten full minutes staring at blurry blue shapes, fully convinced I was seeing some rare marine species.
Plot twist: it was my own thumb.
This guide isn’t written by a tour brochure or a “Top 10” factory. It’s based on real trips, real mistakes, and a lot of time in the Red Sea.
I’ll tell you where to go, when to go, what actually matters, and where not to waste your time.

“Giftun Island snorkeling Hurghada 2026 – healthy coral reef”

The Best Snorkeling Spots in Hurghada (That Actually Matter)
https://www.padi.com/gear/snorkels
Giftun Island – The Safe, Solid Choice
Why everyone goes here:
Healthy reefs, lots of fish, easy conditions. Perfect for beginners.
What most people don’t know:
There are two Giftun Islands.
Big Giftun gets crowded.
Small Giftun? Same fish, way fewer people.
My advice:
Ask your boat captain if they can go to Small Giftun, and go early.
Shaab El Erg (Dolphin House) – The “Maybe Dolphins” Spot
Let’s be honest.
Dolphins are wild animals. They show up when they feel like it.
I’ve been here three times:
Once: dolphins played for almost an hour
Twice: nothing
Still worth it?
Yes. Even without dolphins, the reef is beautiful and wide open.
Abu Ramada – If You Do One Trip, Do This One
Shallow water.
Great visibility.
Tons of fish. Turtles sometimes.
I saw my first sea turtle here and made a noise inside my snorkel that I’m still embarrassed about. No witnesses, thankfully.
A Semi-Secret Spot Near Sahl Hasheesh
This one feels wrong to share… but here we go.
There’s a reef about 20 meters from shore, no boat needed.
Quiet, calm, perfect if you hate crowds.
Note:
Bring your own gear.
And maybe don’t tell everyone
El Fanadir – Drift Snorkeling (Lazy in a Good Way)
You jump in, the current gently carries you along the reef, and the boat picks you up later.
Great for:
People who want to see a lot without swimming much.
Not great for:
Anyone nervous about open water.
Shaab Abu Nuhas – Reefs Around Shipwrecks

The famous wrecks are for divers, not snorkelers.
But the reefs around them are fantastic.
Heads up:
Longer boat ride (45–60 minutes).
Take sea-sickness pills if you need them.
Your Hotel’s House Reef
Some Hurghada hotels have amazing house reefs.
Some… don’t.
Quick test:
If you see fish in knee-deep water → good sign.
If it’s just sand → book a boat trip.
Snorkeling Spots I Honestly Don’t Recommend
Glass-Bottom Boat Reefs
Crowded.
Overused.
Coral looks tired. Fish look annoyed.
If the boat ride is under 20 minutes from the marina, this is probably where you’re going.
“Guaranteed Dolphin” Tours
No ethical operator guarantees dolphins.
If they do, they’re likely chasing them — which is illegal in Egypt now.

Snorkeling Gear – The Honest Truth
Snorkeling once? → Rent.
Snorkeling several days? → Buy a good mask.
What I always bring:
- My own mask (yes, spit in it)
- Long-sleeve rash guard
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Waterproof phone pouch
- Cheap swim shoes
- A mask that fits properly changes everything.
A mask that fits properly changes everything.
I once saw a tourist try to ride a turtle.
Please don’t be that memory.
Safety (Not Fun, But Important)
- Don’t touch anything.
- Don’t stand on coral.
- If you’re tired, float on your back.
- Always look up before surfacing.

Questions People Are Afraid to Ask
“I can’t swim well. Can I still snorkel?”
Yes.
Use a life jacket. Every decent boat has them.
No shame — I use one on rough days.
“Will I see sharks?”
Maybe small reef sharks.
They’re shy and harmless.
I’ve seen about five in fifty trips.
“How much should I tip the crew?”
€5–10 per person for the day is fair.
More if they really help you out.
How to Book a Proper Snorkeling Trip

Avoid:
Street sellers with “special price”.
Look for:
CDWS logo (licensed and insured).
Ask before booking:
- How many people on the boat?
- What time do we leave? (Earlier is better)
Final Thoughts
Hurghada still has some of the best snorkeling in the world —
if you know where to go, when to go, and who to go with.
We work with captains who respect the sea, don’t drop anchors on coral, and actually care.
