Look, I've been on a lot of boats in Hurghada. A lot. Some were brilliant. Some smelled like old diesel and broken promises. But the Dolphin House trip? That one actually delivers — and I say that as someone who spent years rolling his eyes at every tour operator promising "guaranteed dolphin encounters."

There are no guarantees in life. Except maybe sunburn in August.

What Actually Happens on a Dolphin House Hurghada Trip

You get picked up from your hotel. Early. We're talking 8:00 AM, so set two alarms if you had a late night at the marina. The drive to the dock is maybe 20 minutes depending on where you're staying -- El Gouna, Makadi Bay, Soma Bay, Sahl Hasheesh, they all get pickup -- and by the time the boat engine kicks in and that salty Red Sea air hits you, any grogginess completely disappears.

The boat heads out towards the open sea. It takes a while. Honestly, this isn't a little lagoon trip -- Dolphin House reef sits offshore, and the journey is part of the experience.

How to Swim with Dolphins in Hurghada — The Real Version

Here's what nobody tells you: these are wild dolphins. Not trained. Not performing. They genuinely come to this reef because they live here -- it's their home, not a show. And that changes everything about the experience.

You slide into the water. The shock of it wakes you up completely even on a hot day. And then, if you're lucky -- which, statistically, you probably will be, the 99% encounter rate is real -- you see shapes moving through the blue below you.

They don't swim at you. They swim near you, curious and completely unbothered, doing their own thing while you try not to splash like an idiot. The guide, who is actually in the water with you, keeps the group calm and together.

The Snorkeling — Two Stops, One Very Honest Opinion

After the dolphins, the boat moves to two separate coral reef spots for snorkeling. The first stop is the better one -- well, the coral is more intact there, the second spot has seen better days if I'm being honest, but the fish life at both is genuinely impressive.

You get a proper mask, fins, and a life jacket if you want one. The guide stays in the water and points things out. You're not just floating around hoping to spot something -- it's actually guided, which makes a difference.

The water at this point is that shade of blue that looks heavily edited in photos. It isn't. It's just the Red Sea doing what it does.

Lunch on the Boat — Better Than Expected

Back on board, lunch appears. Grilled chicken, rice, salad, bread -- proper food, not a sad sandwich in a bag. Soft drinks are included. The Egyptian mint tea that appears afterwards is, genuinely, the best thing about the second half of the trip.

Now. The music. Someone on every Egyptian tour boat has decided that the journey back requires extremely loud pop music through a speaker that cost about $8. I have no idea who requested this, I forgot my earplugs, but the food genuinely compensates.

Practical Details

Pickup: 08:00 from your hotel Return: Around 16:00 Departure points: Hurghada, El Gouna, Makadi Bay, Soma Bay, Sahl Hasheesh Good for: Families, couples, solo travellers, anyone who can swim at a basic level

One thing worth mentioning -- if you're travelling with young children, the guides are used to it and the life jackets go down to small sizes. To be fair, I've seen kids handle this better than adults who panicked the second a dolphin got within 3 metres.

Is It Worth It?

For a full day on the Red Sea, swimming with wild dolphins, two snorkeling stops, lunch, equipment, and hotel pickup -- the price point makes this one of the better-value days you can have on the Egyptian coast.

Compare that to what a similar dolphin encounter costs in the Canaries or the Maldives, and you start to understand why some people who come here for a week end up enquiring about property before they fly home.
